USPS Challenge: “Mr. Scratch-Off” Digital Variable Scratch and Reveal Technology

The USPS challenged me to discover new printing techniques and technologies for mail, and my latest find is the product of a strategic partnership between Mohawk, HP and Orlando printer, Lawton Connect.

Everyone knows a scratch-off when they see it—usually a silver or gold fixed shape, sometimes with printing over top, sometimes without, and often applied with a flexographic press or as a sticker. But what if I told you that any shape or area could be “scratchable,” and that every product could reveal a different message? What if I told you that the scratchable area would be high-resolution, color accurate, and available in low or high quantities? Well, you might not believe me at first, but I’m here to tell you, it’s true. 

A few years ago, Mohawk had developed and patented a four-color scratch-off technology for digital print, and they approached HP to utilize the technology on their HP Indigo digital presses. After two years of testing with HP, Mohawk approached Lawton Connect in Orlando for a strategic partnership to bring the scratch-off technology to market.
