One April 22nd, many years ago, I was at a friend’s house, and talk happened to bring up the fact that it was Earth Day. My friend’s grandmother—then in her 90s—was a little hearing impaired, and chimed in with the question, “Birthday? Whose birthday is it?” All these years later, the conflation of the two “holidays” seems apt. After all, on any given person’s birthday, they are the center of attention, showered with gifts, plied with alcohol and food, and generally fêted in grand style. And then, the next day, it’s back to normal and the usual insults and indignities of modern life. Or maybe it’s just me. And isn’t Earth Day pretty much the same: we all take 1/365th* of a year to pledge to clean up the Earth and treat our planet with respect and dignity—and then, the next day, it’s back to normal. And how much longer will “normal” cut it? Which is why, I guess, I am ambivalent about the idea of Earth Day—shouldn’t every day be Earth Day? Anyway, if you are planning on getting involved in any Earth Day events this year, a place to start is here. Also, too: we have winners in our Fourth Annual Environmental Innovation Awards! Look for our announcement on Monday, and profiles of the winning companies following our awards celebration on May 17.   * 1/366th this year.
