Xerox and Imation Team to Make Affordable Quality Color Proofing

A continuing cry from the graphic communications community relates to the need for a reasonably priced good quality digital proofing device.

A continuing cry from the graphic communications community relates to the need for a reasonably priced good quality digital proofing device. The answer may be found in the Xerox Docucolor 12 printer/copier with the Imation Matchprint Professional Server. This versatile breakthrough solution is a graphics arts dream come true. For approximately $60,000 one receives a SWOP compliant proof that is with "unrivaled quality and reliability". Possessing Imation "color lock-in calibration" with ICC profiles, automatic calibration for different substrates and Pantone licensed spot color simulations this device revolutionizes proofing.

The limitations to the system are based on its electrostatic toner properties. However, it produces a quality color proof at 600 x 600 dpi with 8-bit resolution. Both Xerox and Imation are dealing with the occasional streaking on heavy stocks and toner piling in dense areas of the proof. The new machines have totally fixed the streaking problem and a retro kit is available for those units already in the field.

On the issue of piling new thresholds are being established to limit density levels. Not withstanding these shortcomings the images produced can be used very effectively for press or comps. Imation offers a range of proofing substrates similar to analog proofing papers, publication, commercial and super white. The true power of the DC 12 is illustrated by it capability to print on any paper stock. If the job is going to print on 70lb Productolith you may show Matchprint quality proofs on the actual stock. If one decides to proof on actual paper stocks the fully amortized cost of a proof can be as low as $2.50 for a 12" x 18" sheet.

A few other notable features are it has four paper trays holding approximately 500 sheets each, prints 2 pages per minute in full color and 50 pages per minute in black ink only and requires no one to monitor the device.

While both Imation and Xerox do not claim this device replaces traditional Matchprints, this writer suggests that 80% of all color proofs produced today by traditional methods could be replaced by this unit. It has a screened dot of approximately 166 line screen and most printing companies who footprint their presses should be able to find a calibration level that both prep and pressroom can be happy with. There are several customized service plans designed to meet almost any users needs from high to low volume.

Currently, Xerox and Imation have been demonstrating this product as part of their national "Color Confidence" road show. So if you are an agency or printer looking for dependable color at an affordable price take a look at the Docucolor 12 with Imation Matchprint software you will be pleased with the results and get as your added bonus a an excellent quality digital printer/copier for those short run print jobs.
