GAERF Approves over $100,000 for Seven New Grants

The Graphic Arts Education and Research Foundation has approved seven new grants for 2001, supporting a variety of projects designed to enhance industry education at every level. The seven new grants total more than $102,000 and bring the total funding distributed by the Foundation since its inception to over $4 million. More than 40 different institutions have received GAERF funding. Among the projects funded is a mini-grant to California Polytechnic State University for support of the Graphic Communication Institute at Cal Poly. Georgia Southern University was awarded a grant to establish a comprehensive industry-training program within the GSU Printing Management Program. The Center for Technology Education at California State University, Los Angeles was awarded a grant to develop an articulated graphic communications career path, elementary through university level. The Technology Student Association (TSA) was awarded its second mini-grant for support of TSA's Desktop Publishing Challenge at the 2001 National Technology Student Association Conference. Approximately 3,500 students will meet at the Conference next summer in Richmond, Virginia, to compete in several technological areas, desktop publishing being one. 2001 GRANTS FOR TEACHER'S CONFERENCES International Graphic Arts Education Association was awarded a GAERF mini-grant for support of its 76th annual conference being held at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois July 29 - August 3, 2001. The weeklong event offers graphic communications educators a series of technical updates, presentations and hands-on lab experiences. Ball State University received a GAERF grant to fund a four-day summer institute for twenty guidance counselors, high school yearbook/newspaper advisors, journalism and arts teachers. The University of Wisconsin-Stout was awarded a GAERF grant for support of two one-week graphic communications workshops targeted at middle and high school graphic communications teachers and high school newspaper/journalism advisors. The Foundation's grant-making program is one part of an expansion of the Foundation's mission, embracing a broadened vision of its goal of advancing knowledge, education and careers in the industry it serves.
