New UltraDev Smashes Productivity Barriers for Application Builders

Press release from the issuing company

New UltraDev Smashes Productivity Barriers for Application Builders Dreamweaver Conference, Monterey, California - Macromedia, Inc. (NASDAQ: MACR) today announced Macromedia Dreamweaver UltraDev 4, the most efficient way to rapidly develop Web applications. A strategic component of the Dreamweaver Platform (see related release), Dreamweaver UltraDev 4 combines all the features of new Dreamweaver 4 with new functionality to enable rapid authoring of robust server-side applications for industry standard application servers. Since its introduction in June, Web application builders have rapidly adopted Dreamweaver UltraDev for its unique ability to preview Live Data in a visual environment. This major upgrade enhances code and visual authoring, resulting in a revolutionary gain in productivity and compelling, data-driven applications. Today, IT departments and Web teams are under immense pressure to deploy e-business applications to deliver a competitive advantage. Web developers and programmers with experience building database-driven Web applications are scarce, and their current development toolset is limited. Design and development processes are not integrated and project timelines are compressed, reducing the ability to improve both functionality and user experience. As a result, individual and team productivity is the key requirement for application building. Dreamweaver UltraDev 4 enables Web application builders currently using code-based tools to accelerate development without sacrificing control and access to source code. Dreamweaver UltraDev 4 is the only solution that can author to Microsoft Active Server Pages (ASP), Sun Microsystems JavaServer Pages (JSP), and Allaire ColdFusionMarkup Language (CFML), resulting in efficiencies as well as a reduced learning curve for the author. As part of the integrated Dreamweaver Platform, version 4 bridges the gap between designers and programmers, distributing the ability to create and refine solutions across the larger team. "Macromedia Dreamweaver UltraDev 4 is the clear leader in the Web application development market, and the software of choice at FCB," said Joe Hollander, CIO of FCB Worldwide, one of the world's largest advertising, direct and interactive agencies. "The enhanced hand-coding environment allows our developers the ease and flexibility theyneed for creating high-impact sites for our global clients. Since Dreamweaver UltraDev 4 supports both Mac and Windows platforms, we can create pages that can utilize JSP, ASP or the ColdFusion environments, and that's a huge plus for us." "Since its introduction in June, Dreamweaver UltraDev has been embraced by Web application developers worldwide as the solution to meet their visual application development needs while maintaining total control over source code," said Kevin Lynch, president of Macromedia products. "Allaire, BroadVision, IBM, Web Gain, and Unify, among others, have already benefited from the ease in customizing Dreamweaver UltraDev for their own specific needs, demonstrating the demand among market leading application builders for a robust, extensible solution for rapidly developing and deploying Web applications." Web application builders can now take advantage of the new integrated Server Behavior Builder to generate code that matches their own development standards. In addition to the ability to create custom server behaviors, Dreamweaver UltraDev 4 also ships with a library of prebuilt, commonly-used ASP, JSP and CFML server scripts that provide navigation and user authentication as well as update databases and insert new records into the database. Additional extensions for Dreamweaver UltraDev are also available at the Macromedia Exchange (http://www.macromedia.com/exchange). The new version allows developers to work in the Code View, Design View or new Split View, which provides simultaneous access to both source and visual editing. Code-centric features include Live Syntax color coding, auto-indenting and line numbers, a client side JavaScript debugger, and support for JavaBeans. New team workflow features include support for WebDAV for content management, and tight integration with Microsoft Visual SourceSafe. Dreamweaver UltraDev 4 also includes an integrated code reference resource from O'Reilly and Associates directly within the authoring environment (see related release). Dreamweaver UltraDev 4 is also offered as part of the UltraDev 4 Fireworks 4 Studio, a completely integrated Web application development solution. The studio offers Web developers a complete set of professional tools to create HTML, ASP, JSP and CFML pages and GIF and JPEG images - all standard components of Web applications. Developers can create, edit and animate Web graphics in Fireworks 4, add advanced interactivity, optimize images and integrate seamlessly with Dreamweaver UltraDev 4 for efficient development of both graphics and code. Please visit http://www.macromedia.com/software/studio/ for more specific information on the UltraDev 4 Fireworks 4 Studio. PRICING AND AVAILABILITY The UltraDev 4 Fireworks 4 Studio is priced at $699. Dreamweaver UltraDev 4 stand-alone is priced at $599. Fireworks 4 stand-alone is priced at $299. Both the studio and stand-alone versions of the products are expected to ship in December 2000.
