Scripps chooses Magnapak for new Florida facility

Press release from the issuing company

DOVER, NH - Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers will utilize one dual-delivery Magnapak inserting system and two NP200 Press Gripper conveyors from Heidelberg at its new production facility under construction in Port St. Lucie, Florida. This shaftless technology will be used to produce The Stuart News, The Port St. Lucie News, The Tribune (Ft. Pierce) and The Press Journal (Vero Beach). Combined circulation for the News/Press-Tribune papers is 99,800 daily and 120,000 Sunday. "We are very excited to include state-of-art, shaftless inserting in our new production facility, explains Michael O'Leary, operations director for Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers. "The dual-out configuration of our Magnapak will allow us high-speed production of our daily products, with the added hopper capacity we need to handle Sunday inserting runs. Magnapak’s easy hopper set-up and ergonomic design will make it a very user-friendly piece of equipment for our packaging staff to learn and to operate.” The dual-delivery Magnapak at Treasure Coast Newspapers will be configured with two NP125 Delivery Gripper conveyors and 25 hoppers, with up to 24-into-1 capacity in single-delivery mode. Dual-delivery mode will be used to achieve high throughput by inserting two product streams simultaneously, each with up to 11-into-1 capacity. Zone control features will also enable different publications to be inserted at the same time. An Omnicon control package includes downstream control functions for automatic key bundling and bundle labeling. The Omnicon system will also interface with a Burt supervisory control system at the Scripps facility, providing advanced zoning and reporting capabilities. One NP200 Press Gripper conveyor will transport products from two press folders, while the second will serve one folder. Both will automatically release waste and paster copies to a Press Waste conveyor provided by TMSI. Turnkey Installation and Training for the complete system are included as well. "It has been a pleasure to work with the entire Heidelberg team, including sales, engineering, and customer support," O'Leary says. "They have been very creative, supportive and have met all of their commitments. We are looking forward to an on-time migration to the new production facility and the Magnapak inserter." Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers plans to conclude transition of full daily production to the Port St. Lucie facility in the fourth quarter of this year.
