Washington - President Barack Obama signed H.R. 5706, a bill designating the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) Public Documents Distribution Center in Pueblo, Colorado as the "Congressman Frank Evans Government Printing Office Distribution Center" into law. Senator Mark Udall, Senator Michael Bennet and Congressman John Salazar lead the legislation through both the House and Senate as a tribute to former Congressman Frank Evans, who passed away in June of 2010.

Congressman Evans first gained Congressional approval for the GPO Public Documents Distribution Center in 1970, making this year the 40th anniversary of his efforts. The center opened for business a year later in 1971. GPO employees in Pueblo work with the General Services Administration's Federal Citizen Information Center to process customer orders. The center is responsible for processing and distributing orders for consumer publications. In the last 40 years, more than 800 million publications have been distributed worldwide.

"The renaming of GPO's Pueblo facility is a great testament to Congressman Evans' commitment in providing the American people access to the documents of our democracy.   I can't think of a more appropriate way to honor one of GPO's many champions and supporters in Congress," said Public Printer Bob Tapella.  "I appreciate the support of Senator Udall, Senator Bennet and Congressman Salazar in recognizing the accomplishments of Congressman Evans."

"From 1964-1978, Congressman Evans represented Colorado's Third District in the U.S. House of Representatives, the seat in which I currently serve," said Congressman John Salazar.  "The tremendous impact of his leadership on our district can still be felt to this day. Congressman Evans was responsible for bringing the Government Printing Office Distribution Center to Pueblo, and I cannot think of a more appropriate way to recognize his hard work and commitment to Western Colorado than to name this building in his honor."

"Congressman Evans was responsible for bringing the Government Printing Office Distribution Center to Pueblo and, with it, hundreds of good-paying jobs," said Senator Michael Bennet.  "He dedicated much of his life to serving Coloradans in Congress, and the printing office is just one of his many contributions that live on today.  The renaming of the printing office is a fitting tribute to Congressman Evans and his great legacy."

"The GPO office has employed hundreds of Puebloans since Frank Evans fought to bring the distribution center to town," said Senator Mark Udall.  "Congressman Evans was the consummate bipartisan, always eager to open his home and his office to Coloradans, no matter their party.  He was quick to laugh, and he fought hard for his district.  There's no better way to thank him and preserve his legacy than to name the GPO distribution center in his honor."
The GPO is the federal government's primary centralized resource for gathering, cataloging, producing, providing, authenticating, and preserving published U.S. government information in all its forms. GPO is responsible for the production and distribution of information products and services for all three branches of the federal government. In addition to publication sales, GPO makes government information available at no cost to the public through GPO's Federal Digital System (www.fdsys.gov) and through partnerships with approximately 1,220 libraries nationwide participating in the Federal Depository Library Program.
