Designers Find a Winning Direction in the Mohawk Show 6 Catalog

Press release from the issuing company

[Cohoes, NY] – Mohawk Fine Papers exhibits the exemplary work of the Mohawk Show 6 winners and finalists in its newly released Mohawk Show 6 catalog. Designed by Chicago-based VSA Partners and printed by Blanchette Press in Vancouver, British Columbia, the oversized, perfect bound catalog provides a large white canvas that elegantly showcases the winning work. Work that is original, engaging and beautifully crafted, as Show-Chair Jamie Koval of VSA states in the introduction. The Show 6 judging panel, Joshua Chen, Jamie Koval, Michael Mabry and Anne Traver, viewed nearly 1,000 entries from all over the world, on a variety of papers including Mohawk, Beckett, Strathmore and Via. While reviewing the extensive variety of work, ranging from large, multi-page projects to beautifully designed two-sided cards; the judges noticed a trend — a departure from the conventional. They saw a refreshing pattern of designers seeking more compelling routes, and finding their own direction. “Because every designer faces questions, ideas and critical decisions on each project, how a designer responds to those challenges is often what makes a good project great,” says Koval. The Show 6 catalog presents the four best-of-show winners, this year’s winner for environmental excellence and the 19 finalists, while sharing the thoughts of the judges as they describe the qualities that make each piece stand out. Winner 1 Herman Miller See Magazine Fall 2004 designed by Cahan Associates “I just love this piece. It represents a great melding of images and words. Herman Miller sees the potential of making things better and it shows. The ‘experience’ is being celebrated here — why art and design are so important. This is very fitting for them.” — Michael Mabry Winner 2 Morningstar Posters designed by Morningstar, Inc. “These look like a 70’s Swiss revival. It is unusual today to see such a restrained graphic approach. You would definitely notice these walking down the hall.” — Anne Traver Winner 3 Tiffany 2005 Spring Mailer designed by Tiffany & Co. “What’s interesting is how beautiful the illustrations are, and the cover treatment. Though it is a new look for Tiffany, it is unmistakably Tiffany’s. I appreciate that the designer of this book respected the integrity of the product and the brand image. This book is flawless.” — Jamie Koval Winner 4 Stuff, self-promotion, designed by Emeryfrost Sydney Studio “It takes bravado to have done this piece this way. First, the overall design must be very good. With the large scale, the work that is shown has to be very good. They win on both cases. Anyone’s work looks good when it’s 1-inch.” — Michael Mabry Winner 5 Environmental Excellence Award Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies Viewbook designed by Pentagram Design “I’ve seen lots of college admission books, and this viewbook stands out. For Yale to have put this photo on the cover instead of the typical collegiate view impressed me. The cover photo drew me in immediately; I wanted to go inside.” — Joshua Chen The Show 6 catalog is printed on Mohawk Options Crystal White, Vellum, 80 cover for the cover and Mohawk Options Crystal White, Smooth, 60 cover for the text pages. The cover is printed match yellow and foil-stamped. The text pages are printed 4/color process plus two match colors and an offline spot dull varnish. Mohawk is now accepting entries for Mohawk Show 7. Judges for the Mohawk Show 7 include: Sean Adams, partner, AdamsMorioka, Los Angeles, CA (show chair); Cheryl Heller, CEO, Heller Communications, New York; Jennifer Morla, president and creative director, Morla Design, San Francisco, CA; Keith Yamashita, chairman and CEO, Stone Yamashita Partners, San Francisco, CA. Five Best of Show winners will be selected (the traditional four top winners and a special award to be announced later this year) and honorable mentions will be chosen for distinctive works that the jury would like to recognize. Winners will receive a three-night trip to the Sundance Film Festival or can they choose to accept a $3,000 cash award instead. The final deadline for entries is May 31, 2006.
