Mitsubishi Double Diamond Perfector Cuts Productions Time in Half for C&B Graphics

Press release from the issuing company

CHERRY HILL, N.J. - C&B Graphics Inc. believes in responsive service. The 7-year-old general commercial printer prides itself on being able to receive an order for, say, 10,000 bound copies of a 48-page booklet and have the finished project in the customer's hands the very next day. In fact, C&B Graphics' motto is: "When You Really Need It Overnight." The installation of a Mitsubishi Diamond 3000R convertible sheetfed perfector with double coaters allows C&B Graphics to keep up the fast pace in the shop while expanding its menu of offerings, according to Bill Eachus, president. "I can't say enough good things about Mitsubishi presses," Eachus said. "They're second to none. Recently, we printed 400,000 impressions, four-over-four, on the perfector in three days, and then followed that up with a 750,000-sheet job." The eight-color, 40-inch perfector, known as the Double Diamond, is equipped with inline aqueous coaters before and after the sheet-reversing unit. This configuration enables the press to print and coat both sides of the sheet in one productive pass. The Double Diamond is C&B Graphics' third Mitsubishi press. The company also operates two 40-inch Mitsubishi Model 3F straight presses: an eight-color installed in 1999 and a six-color installed in 2000. Both feature aqueous coaters and offer the full range of Mitsubishi printing technology. "The feeder and delivery systems are first class," Eachus said. "We can switch from 40-pound text to 24-point board stock effortlessly and without marking problems. Trying to do that with another press would make you pull your hair out. As the result of our favorable experience with those two Mitsubishi presses, we purchased the Double Diamond." C&B Graphics was founded in 1998 in Pennsauken, N.J. To accommodate the new press, the privately owned firm bought the 41,000-square-foot printing plant in nearby Cherry Hill previously owned by Strathmore Press. In January, C&B Graphics moved into its new home from its 24,000-square-foot Pennsauken location. With 35 full-time and several part-time employees, C&B Graphics provides prepress, printing and binding services. The bindery department houses saddle stitchers, folders, cutters, and drilling and shrink-wrapping systems. C&B Graphics' press lineup gives the pressroom great flexibility in delivering magazines, professional guides, brochures and marketing materials up to eight colors with water-based coatings. In addition to multicolor commercial products, packaging printing is an area the company has expanded into in recent years. The Double Diamond is ideally suited to C&B Graphics' product needs. In the perfecting mode, the press can print various stock types up to 12 points. When converted to straight printing, it easily handles paper, board and specialty substrates up to a thickness of 24 points. The first tower coater passes the sheet to a cylinder extension, which then transfers the sheet to the reversing unit. Once the sheet goes through the perfecting unit, the inking and coating processes are repeated. The results are improved pressroom productivity and superior finished products. "We can cut 45 percent off the time it takes to complete a double-pass job by running the job once through the perfector," Eachus pointed out. C&B Graphics typically runs its presses two shifts, five days a week. When necessary to get the job done on an accelerated deadline, it becomes an around-the-clock shop. "It's very important to be responsive to customers' needs," Eachus remarked. "It also helps you competitively if you can make those difficult deliveries." A good example of this business philosophy involved the 2005 team catalog for the Philadelphia Phillies ball club. "The team needed some 60,000 catalogs in three days," Eachus recalled "We printed the job on the Double Diamond and turned it around in a day and a half." That kind of hard work has paid off. C&B Graphics posted $7 million in sales in 2004. Eachus said the company is on track to exceed $10 million in 2005. Not only has the printing equipment outperformed expectations, but the quality of service is also superior to that of other manufacturers, Eachus said. "I've never worked with a company that provided this level of service," he stated. "The Mitsubishi presses are rarely down, but if we ever need a service call, a technician is here usually the same day. That means a lot to us."
