Brown Goes Green

Press release from the issuing company

Waseca, MN – In celebration of Earth Day and its continued commitment to the environment, Brown Printing Company has made a donation in honor of each of its clients to The Nature Conservancy’s Plant a Billion Trees Campaign.  Brown Printing has made a commitment not only to its clients, but also to its community.  From hosting recycling weeks to rewarding employees for car pooling, Brown is giving back to the communities in which it grows promoting sustainability for future generations.

“Brown’s environmental responsibility requires us to constantly be on the lookout for new ways to reduce our impact on our world,” according to Jill Tobin, Director of Marketing & Strategy.

These initiatives include the receipt of Forest Stewardship Council and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® chain-of-custody certifications. These globally recognized and accepted certifications allow Brown’s customers to choose certified paper for all of their printed materials. Brown is also proud to be an industry leader and early adopter of Virtual Proofing.  Virtual Proofing is now offered on each and every press at Brown eliminating the need for paper proofs and reducing emissions incurred while shipping.  Brown’s state of the art co-mailing combines shipments creating full trucks, resulting in fewer trips and reduced emissions.

“At Brown Printing Company we have a strong commitment to the environment, and so do our customers,” said Tobin.  “These certifications and initiatives play a critical role in our environmental policy and empower our customers to make an educated environmental choice about the products they use.”
Plenty Magazine, a three year old lifestyle magazine offering actionable advice on how to reduce one’s impact on the planet and live a greener life has taken full advantage of these services.  In line with their message, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief, Mark Spellun was understandably concerned about the printing process, the use of paper and UV coatings.

Brown worked closely with Plenty to develop an environmental plan including printing on a body stock that is free of elemental chlorine and contains 85 to 100% recycled content. In addition, the cover uses 10% recycled content, is Forest Stewardship Council certified and made with green power.  According to Spellun, “Brown walked us through every step of the way, and helped us fulfill every aspect of the magazine.”
