Bowne Names Fagan as President and CEO of Globalization Unit

Press release from the issuing company

NEW YORK, Dec. 16 -- Bowne & Co., Inc., a global leader in delivering high-value document management solutions, today announced the appointment of James E. Fagan, Jr., 51, as President and CEO of Bowne Global Solutions (BGS). BGS is one of the company's four core business units and the leading provider of outsourced globalization solutions, with operations in 24 countries. Fagan succeeds Carl D. Glaeser, who has headed the BGS unit since 1999 and has decided to leave the company after reaching his objective of taking BGS to industry leadership. "Jim Fagan is an outstanding executive, a top global strategist and a sales management expert with a keen understanding of the marketplace and BGS' growth opportunities," said Bowne & Co. Chairman and CEO Robert M. Johnson. "Our strategy is to expand BGS through organic growth, client and service diversification, and selective, strategic acquisitions. As a result, BGS has made two major acquisitions in the past 16 months that have vaulted this unit to the top of the globalization industry. This is a position we intend to maintain and build upon in the coming months and years through Jim's leadership of an outstanding group of managers and employees in BGS' expanding worldwide network. "At the same time," Johnson noted, "we also recognize that this unit's significant expansion occurred under the leadership of Carl Glaeser. Now that Carl has achieved this personal and business goal, he has decided to move on to other ventures. We wish him every success and thank him for his extraordinary contributions to Bowne." On September 30, BGS completed its acquisition of Berlitz GlobalNet, a provider of globalization and localization services, software testing, translation and interpretation services. That acquisition, which nearly doubled BGS' annualized forecasted revenues, has helped the division to expand its range of services and begin to attract clients in new industries as it reduces reliance on the hard-hit technology sector. In August 2001, BGS completed the acquisition of Mendez S.A., a leading provider of localization, translation technology and technical translation services. Fagan has been Senior Vice President, Strategy and New Business Development, for Bowne & Co. since May 2001 and Chief Operating Officer for BGS since September 2002. He has driven Bowne's strategic planning program and has played a key role in the company's diversification. A Bowne veteran, Fagan previously served with the company in the early 1990s as Vice President and Director of Mutual Funds Services, and Vice President and Sales Manager, Financial Print, for Bowne of New York. From 1994 to 2001, he was an executive with R.R. Donnelley Financial, the financial printing division of R.R. Donnelley & Sons, where his last position was Senior Vice President and Director of Capital Market Global Sales. At Donnelley, Fagan was responsible for the growth and strategic development of its core business within the financial printing group, development of its international sales and operations platforms on three continents, and the acquisition of key companies in the domestic transactional market. He began his financial printing career with Donnelley as a Sales Representative in 1984. Fagan holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from LeMoyne University, a Master of Arts degree from St. John's University and AMP Certification in International Executive Management from Harvard University Business School. Among his community activities, he is Treasurer of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of New York.
