Weyerhaeuser Publishes 2001 Annual Environment, Health and Safety Report

Press release from the issuing company

FEDERAL WAY, Wash.--Aug. 1, 2002--Weyerhaeuser Company today announced the release of the ninth edition of its Annual Environment, Health and Safety Report. The publication includes key metrics and highlights that demonstrate progress against the company's environment, health and safety goals of practicing sustainable forestry, reducing pollution, conserving natural resources, and improving employee health and safety. The 2001 report references significant related achievements, including: * Decades of applying the industry's highest forest stewardship practices has resulted in more than 67 percent of the company's timberlands operations being certified by a third party to national environmental standards by the end of 2001. These certifications verify that Weyerhaeuser meets strict requirements to ensure that it grows and harvests trees in a manner that protects natural resources and renews forests. * Six manufacturing facilities in North America were also certified as part of the company's commitment to align all company operations to the ISO 14001 international Environmental Management System standard. This validates that these operations effectively manage the environmental aspects of their activities, products and services. * Numerous U.S. and Canadian facilities achieved or exceeded company safety goals. Sixty-six percent of operating units achieved one year without a lost-time accident. Forty percent of facilities had recordable incident rates of less than one. And 22 percent of units had no recordable incidents. All Weyerhaeuser facilities continued to work to improve safety and meet company safety goals. "For over a century, Weyerhaeuser has worked to build a reputation as a responsible corporate citizen because we believe that no business can survive, let alone prosper, unless it addresses the needs of its stakeholders," said Sara Kendall, vice president, Environment, Health and Safety. "We are working to balance our environmental, social and financial responsibilities to become a global leader and the best forest products company in the world."
