17 Straight Years: Quad Named Printer of the Year by Newsweek

Monday, March 25, 2002

Press release from the issuing company

March 25, 2002 -- Consistently producing the highest quality newsweekly for Newsweek has been a staple at Quad/Graphics since 1985. Proof positive: They have been named Newsweek's Printer of the Year for 17 straight years. The company’s Hartford plant has won the award the past four years, including 2001, and seven out of the past eight years. In other years, plants in The Rock, Georgia, and Pewaukee, Wisconsin, have earned the No. 1 ranking. "We have done pretty well the past years regarding this performance award," said Ray Minturn, Hartford administrative plant manager. "Our success is really about focus. Whether process management, teams, objectives, competitors, or client-related, all employees have to recognize and accept these challenges. I think we have done that. "Newsweek is a great account for us," he added. "It is gratifying to receive this distinction." Criteria Newsweek uses to determine its Printer of the Year include paper waste (cover and current forms), bindery speeds, time needed to produce the first 100,000 books, turnaround time from the last file to the first book, quality evaluation, and service and support.  "Hartford does a wonderful job in all phases of printing weekly magazines," said Mark Heeman, associate director of Field Operations for Newsweek. "This year Hartford had consistently good work week in and week out in paper waste. They pretty much have the market cornered in weekly magazines." Currently, Newsweek is printed from Quad/Graphics facilities in Hartford, Wisconsin; The Rock, Georgia; and Saratoga Springs, New York.
