R.R. Donnelley and netLibrary Announce Short-Run Book Printing Alliance

Press release from the issuing company

BOULDER, CO - June 1, 2001 netLibrary Inc., a leading provider of eBooks and Internet-based content and collection management services, today announced the addition of R.R. Donnelley & Sons Company (NYSE: DNY) to its Certified list of Global Print Solution print partners. Global Print Solution is a short-run, digital printing service that allows publishers to take advantage of a secure Extranet application to efficiently facilitate book orders of 10 to 1,000 throughout the globe. Rob Kaufman, netLibrary President and CEO stated, "We are excited to be working with R.R. Donnelley. Its recognized, industry-leading communications solutions and printing expertise is a welcome addition to the services we offer publishers." R.R. Donnelley's Digital Services Center in Allentown, Pa. is conveniently located near many publishers' warehouses and distribution centers. In addition to short-run book manufacturing, the facility also provides a digital asset management solution, an online custom publishing system, e-book conversion and composition services. "Being a part of netLibrary's network will allow us to offer our digital print solutions to a wide range of University presses and scholarly publishers", said Edward E. Lane, president of R.R. Donnelley's Book Publishing Services business. "netLibrary's database of files, coupled with our short-run print expertise, will enable publishers to economically manage their backlist inventories. It will also give publishers more options when deciding whether to keep titles in print." Global Print Solution allows publishers to tap into netLibrary's proven network of file conversion and print partners, while also affording publishers the economies of scale of netLibrary's multi-million dollar storage and distribution infrastructure. R.R. Donnelley seamlessly passed netLibrary's Printer Certification Process, which assures publishers that the netLibrary/R.R. Donnelley alliance will produce books that exceed minimum book manufacturing standards. Publishers send netLibrary print-ready files, which netLibrary securely hosts and distributes to R.R. Donnelley and other print partners. If publishers do not have a print-ready file for a title, the publisher can take advantage of netLibrary's world-wide network of conversion partners to have files created that meet minimum quality standards and take advantage of netLibrary's negotiated bulk conversion pricing. netLibrary can facilitate this process for publishers or refer publishers directly to conversion partners. Once files are received at netLibrary, engineers apply an internally developed technology to each file that allows the file to be optimally printed on any quality digital printer such as the diverse printers utilized by R.R. Donnelley. Publishers then use the Global Print Solution Extranet to place print orders directly with R.R. Donnelley. According to Jeff Nock, netLibrary's Senior Director of Business Development-Publishing and head of Global Print Solution, "netLibrary is proud to have R.R. Donnelley as part of Global Print Solution. Its inclusion in our network means that even the largest publishers now have a world-wide network of digital printers from which to easily place short-run print orders." Terry Lamoureux, Production Manager at MIT Press and an early advisor to Global Print Solution said, "I am happy to see netLibrary add R.R. Donnelley to their list of Global Print Solution printers. With the addition of R.R. Donnelley to netLibrary's stellar list of printers, we now have all the options we need for short run printing. By allowing the netLibrary conversion of our eBooks and short-run print files, we experience both flexibility and incremental savings."
