CHICAGO, May 11, 2001 - As part of its strategy to revolutionize communications effectiveness by creating the most integrated and flexible printing "platform of the future" for its customers, R. R. Donnelley & Sons Company (NYSE: DNY) is expanding its Mattoon, Ill., manufacturing facility. The $48 million expansion includes the creation of approximately 100 jobs over the next 18 months; a 120,000-square-foot addition to the existing facility; and associated equipment. "The Mattoon Division has had a rich history of expansion over the last 33 years. This growth makes for an exciting addition to our capabilities and customer base," said Isabelle Day, Vice President and Mattoon Division Director. "We are proud to be a key part of the Mattoon and Coles County community, whose solid support and people have made this growth possible." This expansion is being driven by R. R. Donnelley's strategy to invest in its network of printing plants to better meet customer requirements. It is also related to the movement of work resulting from the company's announcement on April 30, 2001, that it will be closing its Des Moines, Iowa, facility by July 2002. New employees, transfers from other company sites, and promotions from within the Mattoon facility will fill the additional positions. The anticipated positions include entry level, craft, technical, and support. The Mattoon facility, established in 1968, currently employs more than 1,700 people. Tim Weibel, senior vice president of commercial print operations for R. R. Donnelley, said he was proud to see the Mattoon division continue to grow. "This expansion will strengthen our overall printing platform and enable us to better meet our customers' expectations for speed to market and quality," he said.
