HP Settles Inkjet Cartridge Packaging Dispute

Press release from the issuing company

PALO ALTO, Calif., March 29, 2001 Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HWP) today announced the resolution of its dispute with Gotan Hsu SA (Gotan) over packaging for thermal inkjet cartridges in Spain. According to the settlement, Gotan has agreed to cease sales of the disputed packaging. HP sells its own thermal inkjet cartridges worldwide in distinctive bevel-shaped boxes, which are protected throughout the world by HP intellectual property rights. Gotan imported certain cartridges manufactured by the Taiwanese company, IUT, into Spain, advertising them as intended replacements for the HP 51626A and HP 51629A cartridges. HP recently objected to the importation and sale of these products on several grounds, including the use of bevel-shaped boxes, and asserted an HP European Community trademark, among other rights.
