WhatTheyThink’s Going Green has joined forces with Two Sides to help address the “perceptions” that paper destroys forests, that electronic media are “greener” than print and paper, and that recycling is the solution to all environmental ills.
A
2009 study found that, in the Western U.S. alone, “tree mortality rates have more than doubled since 1955.”
Why Should You Care?
We mention this in the context of another study cited elsewhere in this issue of the Going Green Digest that looks at the issue of potential forest die-backs resulting from drought conditions brought on potentially by climate change. The mechanism is “hydraulic failure” and many tree species are ill-equipped to handle drastic changes in the water supply. This is why we say, if we are serious about saving trees, we should look to address the much larger ecological issues that affect tree and forest health, and not focus on the purported “dangers” of using trees for paper or other products. Otherwise, we’re just missing the forest for the...well, you know.
