WhatTheyThink’s Going Green has joined forces with Two Sides to help address the “perceptions” that paper destroys forests, that electronic media are “greener” than print and paper, and that recycling is the solution to all environmental ills.
According to the American Forest & Paper Association’s new
2012 Sustainability Report, “Better Practices, Better Planet,” “66.8% of all paper consumed in the U.S. was recovered for recycling in 2011, nearly doubling our rate of recovery since 1990.” And up 5.3% between 2009 and 2011.
Why should you care?
The 2012 sustainability report also points up strides that AF&PA member companies have made in other areas in addition to recycling: greenhouse has emissions are down, energy efficiency is up, water usage is improved, and workplaces are safer. The report also contains a wide variety of real-world examples of sustainability initiatives that member companies are implementing. As an example: “An AF&PA member company has redesigned a drink carton reducing packaging weight 20 percent, energy and CO
2 emissions associated with producing and shipping the cartons 30 percent, and truck traffic on highways for shipping cartons 20 percent.” We at Going Green like these kinds of stories.
