After have been shamed by Greenpeace, Lego, the Danish toy manufacturer, has announced that it will no longer source its packaging material from Asia Pulp and Paper (APP). Greenpeace has cited APP as one the most egregious exploiters of Indonesian forests. Lego has taken this opportunity to scale down the amount of packaging it uses overall, says
Environmental Leader, and to use recycled materials wherever feasible. Where recycled packaging is not possible, Lego will source FSC-certified paper.
Greenpeace have Lego a shout-out on its blog, while pointing out that the other major toy manufacturers—Hasbro, Mattel, and Disney—have yet to sever ties with APP. Last month, Greenpeace made waves by attaching a large banner to Mattel’s headquarters that had Ken—Barbie’s longtime beau—announce “Barbie, it’s over. I don’t date girls that are into deforestation.” (It’s been—what?—50 years and they’re still just dating?) Talk about Barbie’s Malibu Nightmare House....
