I was amused to receive my latest credit card statement in the mail this morning, and on the envelope is their latest gambit to get me to help them fire their printer. Instead of appealing to my sense of environmental responsibility ("Save a tree! Switch to paperless statements!"), they are now trying to play on my paranoia about identity theft, printing on their envelopes "A paper trail is an identity thief's best friend."
I've had my credit card numbers nicked on no fewer than five occasions in the last few years, and I can safely say that paper was responsible for none of them. Yes, perhaps my "account information is locked away safely online," but my old statements are definitely "locked away safely in my basement."
