Indoor air quality is a big issue for even the smallest offset printer. The smell of VOCs is a sure sign that the air you’re breathing is probably not as good for you as the morning sea breeze. Habitat Imaging and its distributors Collins Supply (MN) and Best Chem Supply (OH) liken the smell of VOC-laden inks and fountain solutions to that of a skunk – a warning that there is something very unpleasant for you if you don’t watch out. Playing off this odoriferous metaphor, Habitat markets its litho ink and one-step fountain solution as a clean-air package – a bundle of products that, it says, delivers vibrant color performance with no petroleum fillers, petroleum solvents, or other hazardous materials, and, therefore, a lot less odor. The company claims that the made-in-USA products’ VOC levels are less than 4%. Habitat inks perform like conventional offset inks (the company says they perform even better), and there are formulations sheet fed and web presses, so this clean-air solution is well-suited to printing facilities of all sizes. As would be expected, Habitat distributors handle mixing and draw-downs for Pantone color-matching. To be sure, Habitat is marketing itself with an uber-dose of bravado and more than a hint of hyperbole. But if product performance lives up to the spiel, small and large print shops, alike, have another uber-clean option that can deliver great images and a healthier workplace.
