When a $100 billion company focuses on the “Triple Bottom Line,” it can make a big difference. A comprehensive report of HP’s global citizenship activities centered on three priorities: climate and energy efficiency, supply chain responsibility, and product reuse and recycling. The company’s major accomplishments include:
  • HP found suppliers are making strong progress toward the same social and environmental standards HP holds itself to, as confirmed in 150 supplier audits.
  • HP met its goal - nearly three years ahead of schedule - to reduce the annual energy consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions from operations and products sold to 20% below 2005 levels. HP has increased its target to 25% below 2005 emission levels, by 2010.
  • HP exceeded its goal to recycle 1 billion pounds (450,000 tonnes*) of electronic products and supplies by the end of 2007.
The company is planning some interesting initiatives for 2008 as well:
  • 5,000 solar panels will be installed on the roofs of five buildings at HP’s San Diego site, which will generate an estimated 1.7 million kWh of electricity.
  • “Eat your own dog food;” by implementing its own products - HP Web Jetadmin and Universal Print Driver to configure printers - HP expects to move 80 percent of general office printing and copying to be double-sided by the end of 2008, saving up to 726 tonnes of paper a year and $7.7 million.
  • Recover 1 billion pounds (450,000 tonnes) of electronic products (for reuse and recycling) and supplies (for recycling) from 2008 through 2010.
While your company may not be recycling billions of pounds of products and supplies, you can make a difference too. Take a look at the report and see which initiatives you can implement or modify to fit your situation. * A tonne (or metric ton) is a measurement of mass equal to 1,000 kilograms.
