The ad:tech show is going on right now in New York City. A quick glance at the list of 250 exhibitors reveals Zero (Update - Adam found one see comments) print firms. Why is that? The show is billed as an interactive advertising and technology conference. The motto of the conference is "bringing you the now and the next of modern marketing".
Just attending the show would be a good idea. The speaker list is a "who's who" of advertising and marketing executives who control millions in media spending. David Lubars, CEO of BBDO North America, spoke yesterday about engagement in his keynote titled, From the Alley to the Avenue. “I don’t care what the medium is as long as it’s something that people want to engage with,†said Lubars to a packed room of interactive marketers.
DM News reported on the keynote and stated that "engagement" was a common theme at the conference. Many would suggest that PRINT is an engaging medium. Interested printers should consider attending the next ad:tech show in April.

I think the point is that no established national or large regional printing company that relies on publishing and agency revenues is at the show, nor is there a print association, in the midst of such high-level cutting edge executives. I think we'd expect a startup Internet printer to be at a show like this. But our flagship companies, and suppliers, are nowhere to be found, not even on a panel. These are people making million dollar media decisions, and we pretend that they're not even there.

Do you know if ad:tech is going to be coming to the UK at all? I noticed they're having a Sydney show in February, but no news about anywhere else (asides from the USA).

It appears that there are no ad:tech shows in the UK, but I would imagine being involved in similar groups in the UK would be positive for UK printers. Maybe check the UK chapter of the International Advertising Association. Here is a link to http://www.iaauk.com/main.cfm?cid=221&nid=2549" rel="nofollow"> their site and events list.
