PSDA Revitalized Through New Management Arrangement
Last year, PSDA (Print Services & Distribution Association) announced it had entered into a management agreement with association management firm SmithBucklin, the same organization that manages Dscoop and the XMPie Users Group. WhatTheyThink checked in with PSDA Board President Bill Prettyman and Executive Vice President Matt Sanderson to see how things were proceeding.

I have worked with the PSDA for years as a writer for their reports and magazine. I know this team, and they are really great.
I just attended the Print Solutions 2011 conference and can attest that the PSDA membership almost unanimously felt the same way — that the PSDA had, in fact, become more valuable and responsive since the change. That doesn't happen very often, so good job PSDA executive team! The content in the seminars was outstanding. I mean outstanding.
I do want to sound a warning to commercial printers, too. PSDA distributors are hard on your heels in adding marketing services to their arsenals (something I have written about on Digital Nirvana). So watch out — you've got more competition.
It's worth noting here that SmithBucklin is a truly excellent company that employs the highest quality individuals working in the association management arena globally today.
Perhaps most impressive about this story is that the board of the PSDA had the guts to bring them in. Our industry tends to be a bit insular when it comes to these things.
Look at the great benefits the association and its members are now reaping. And it's only the beginning. The best example is the trajectory DSCOOP has had in its short tenure. Many people drove its success, but clearly a lot of credit goes to Eric Hawkinson and SmithBucklin.
Working with SmithBucklin lets the volunteer leadership of an association steer the group to focus on what's important for them, and the industry, and the results are better and sooner realized.
