Frank Against the Establishments

Frank looks into statistics reporting the number of printing establishments. Government data for NAICS 323 does not include Staples and FedEx Office, about 3,000 U.S. sites. Very small printers may self-categorize. We need more accurate industry sizing.

Frank,

This has always been a problem. I used to track the number of establishments when I was at EFI and it was always difficult. Not sure, but was Kinkos listed as a "printer" before they were bought by FedEx? Also, how does Textile and other inkjet imaging fit in here? Is ceramic and wood printing included or do they also tend to fall back into their parent organzations coding?

And of course there are also a lot of in-plant printers that are not counted in the government numbers under NAICS 323 (or anywhere, for that matter).
Note: Printing on fabric and textiles is under NAICS 313 (313310 to be exact).
