Agfa Monotype to Supply Fonts to e-Book Publishers

Press release from the issuing company

Wilmington, Massachusetts, - Agfa Monotype Corporation, a leading provider of fonts and font technologies, today announced its new font licensing and embedding model for the e-book publishing industry. Fonts from Agfa Monotype's ITC and Monotype Classics libraries-long-time staples in the printing and publishing industries-will now be available for e-book publishers through a simplified extension of the company's standard licensing model. Most font foundries license fonts for use on a set number of workstations and do not provide for redistribution of the trademarked and copyrighted font data without an additional license. Agfa Monotype, however, has developed a simple model to extend its standard license. Publishers can now embed such popular Agfa Monotype book fonts as Monotype Baskerville, Bembo, Dante, Plantin, ITC Charter and ITC Berkeley Oldstyle for redistribution in e-books. Agfa Monotype's new e-book license grants publishers a license to embed fonts by paying a one-time license fee. This license covers distribution of font data specific to the e-book for the life of that e-book. "Publishers have relied on our fonts since Monotype Typography was formed over 100 years ago, and we're pleased to continue that relationship within the framework of this exciting new media," said Ira Mirochnick, senior vice president for Agfa Monotype. "The purpose of e-book readers is to deliver content in a simple and uncluttered way, and fonts are perhaps the most important ingredient in delivering that message." Font embedding technology provides publishers with the ability to include the actual font data for redistribution in an e-book, whether the fonts are embedded in the e-book document or the e-book reader. This means publishers are able to control the content's presentation-perhaps the most important aspect of a positive user experience and the ultimate success of the e-book. Alternatively, if a publisher chooses not to embed fonts, the user's computer will likely default to a system font, possibly causing the text to re-flow-offsetting readability and the overall user experience. In addition to thousands of book fonts available today for the e-book publishing community, Agfa Monotype offers a growing range of fonts developed sp ecifically for optimal on-screen display andoduction on low-resolution devices. Agfa Monotype's Enhanced Screen QualityÅ (ESQ) fonts far surpass typical PostScriptÆ and TrueTypeÆ fonts in clarity and readability.
