W+D – Empowering the Envelope at Graph Expo

Press release from the issuing company

At GraphExpo 2012, leading mail solutions provider W+D (Booth 3601) is showcasing four solutions designed to increase the impact of envelopes for direct mail and eliminate the production inefficiencies that have led to electronic communication being favored over print.

  • W+D TIMOS Totally Integrated Mail Output Solution
  • W+D 234 d digital envelope overprinter
  • W+D BB700 envelope inserting system
  • W+D 320 envelope production system

The highlight on the W+D booth is W+D TIMOS, the first Totally Integrated Mail Output Solution, which will be demonstrated via video presentation. Following its global debut at drupa 2012, this is the first opportunity for North American direct mail producers to see how W+D TIMOS delivers envelope manufacturing, individual printing and inserting (enveloped-on-the-fly) in a single pass, going from reel to postal tray in seconds. Producing up to 15,000 TIMails per hour, with envelope formats from #7, 9-12, W+D TIMOS offers highest quality 4-color, full face, front and reserved digital printing for individualization or personalization.

The new W+D 234 d, the fastest industrial digital 4-color inkjet envelope overprinter in the world, will be at GraphExpo, printing competitive offset quality on standard white wove envelope stock. Visitors will see for themselves the scope this machine offers for high quality 1:1 marketing at speeds up to 30,000 envelopes per hour.

Also being demonstrated on the W+D booth is the company's fastest inserting line, the W+D BB700, capable of processing formats from 5"x7" up to 10"x13" at 16,000 cycles per hour. The W+D BB700 is ideal for the transactional segment where the secure and reliable processing and personalizing of inserts/envelopes is crucial.

Commercial printers and direct mail producers looking to in-source envelope production can inform themselves about the W+D 320 envelope production system. This fast and highly flexible, short-run solution is ideally suited to today's rapidly changing customer demand and job mix.

"Our mission at W+D is to empower the envelope," says CEO Jochen Engelke. "We're focused on delivering solutions that address the historical competitive disadvantages of printed direct mail. From specialist printers and converters to direct marketing agencies to corporates, W+D products help direct mail producers to create high quality, individualised and targeted mailings that deliver the response rates their marketing clients demand."

New Nielsen study: Printed envelopes the most effective direct mail option
In today's ultra-competitive marketing environment, 'Time-to-Mailbox' is critical. Brand owners need their marketing messages to reach audiences punctually, efficiently and with maximum impact. Until now, these drivers have often pointed to the use of large volume email over targeted direct mail.

W+D highlights recent independent research from Nielsen in the USA and Germany, which confirms that a printed envelope is still the most effective mailing option compared with email, self mailers, wrappers and standard envelopes. At 84.5%, printed envelopes deliver the highest open and read rate of any direct mail format, and have the highest recall value with recipients. Only one in every 20 email recipients can remember receiving an email and what it contained; this figure rises to one in three for a printed envelope. The research also shows that a high quality printed envelope adds perceived value to a mail item, doubling pass-on rates for the content of the mailing compared with email.

The research offers evidence that even digital natives – younger target groups who regularly consume information digitally – are difficult to reach with email. 63.2% of this demographic group admit that email messages simply 'disappear'; in contrast, they perceive customized physical envelopes very positively."

Jochen Engelke concludes, "Game-changing production innovations such as TIMOS from W+D will ensure that the envelope is now not only the most effective option for marketers, but that it's also competitive with email on speed and efficiency."
