Goss demonstrates new servo drive saddlestitching technology at Graph Expo

October 10th, 2004 - After acquiring Heidelberg's high-volume postpress product line, Goss International is demonstrating its commitment to continuous innovation at Graph Expo 2004. The company demonstrates the new servo driven hoppers for its Goss Pacesetter 1100 saddlestitcher. "Servo drives represent the next frontier in high-volume postpress technology," says John Morgenstern, Director of Postpress Product Management for Goss. "A system like the Pacesetter 1100 with independent motors for each hopper provides significant makeready and versatility advantages." The Pacesetter 1100 system was first demonstrated at Drupa 2004. Quad/Graphics, Inc. has ordered the first four systems for installation in the United States. Because the Goss Pacesetter 1100 hoppers are independently driven, operators can complete makereadies on each one separately and they can set up idle hoppers while others are running. Servo drive technology allows hopper-to-chain phasing to be adjusted independently, making it easier to manage multiple product formats going into a single book. Goss Pacesetter 1100 hoppers can also be removed and repositioned within a system twice as quickly as hoppers linked to a mechanical drive shaft. The Goss Pacesetter 1100 saddlestitcher runs at up to 20,000 books per hour and can be equipped with vertical or horizontal hoppers. Goss can also supply optional servo driven card feeders for the system. In conjunction with the new hopper technology, Goss has enhanced its Omniflex software package for saddlestitcher and adhesive binding systems. Omniflex software provides selective binding with single-copy control and controls inkjet messages that can be printed almost anywhere within a product. "Catalogers and publishers are increasingly turning to customization and personalization as a way to differentiate printed products and make them more effective," explains Morgenstern. "With innovations like the servo driven hoppers and Omniflex software, we are providing the tools to meet these evolving production demands with a higher level of efficiency and without sacrificing fast net throughput."
