ORIS Digital Proofing System for Canon Secures SWOP Certification

Minneapolis, MN (January 2, 2002) -- CGS Publishing Technologies International has been granted SWOP (Specifications for Web Offset Publications) certification for the ORIS Color Tuner system, using Canon's new imagePROGRAF W2200, W7250 andW7200 printers. By following the instructions in the ORIS Application Data Sheet, proofs from these Canon devices can be consistently reproduced at the quality level intended and desired by an advertiser or publisher. CGS first announced its integration with the Canon six-color devices at Graph Expo 2002 in early October.
ORIS Color Tuner was the first proofing system of its kind to receive SWOP certification, in February 2002, using inkjet devices from another manufacturer. Certification with the faster Canon devices is a significant new milestone for the two companies. "We were duly impressed by the quality, and particularly the speed of the Canon offering," said CGS President Trevor Haworth. "Our development team is working directly with Canon's, using their CMYK drivers and dithering patterns. SWOP certification was an important step in bringing this technology to the graphic arts market."
The certification test requires that manufacturers of off-press proofing systems submit a SWOP Application Data Sheet (ADS) and representative proofs, which are checked for quantitative conformance and visual match to a press proof by the SWOP Technical committee. The ADS, available from the SWOP and CGS web sites, provide directions for producing proofs as close as possible to the appearance of the SWOP Certified Press Proof. The successful test output from ORIS Color Tuner used Canon inks and prepress-customized paper from CGS.
To produce consistent, contract quality proofs on affordable inkjet devices, ORIS Color Tuner uses advanced color management, customized paper and (in certain, non-Canon devices) customized inks. The system's selective color correction functionality is unique. Color Tuner version 5, announced at Graph Expo, will also feature automatic device calibration and independent spot color calibration.
For over 25 years, SWOP has been an industry leader in promoting consistency and quality of advertising material in publications. The 9th Edition of the Specifications, published in 2001, includes both digital and analog workflows. SWOP is a registered trademark of SWOP, Inc. (www.swop.org). The Canon imagePROGRAF line of high-speed, high-quality, six-color printers feature Canon's MicroFine Droplet Technology™ and incorporate Canon's exclusive 1+-inch print head and 7,680 super-fine, high-density, extreme-precision nozzles. The W2200 model creates output at up to 2400x1200dpi resolution on graphic arts proofing paper up to 13"x19". The larger format models W7250 and W7200 create output with up to 600x1200dpi resolution. Both devices use continuous, roll-fed paper, with outputs of 24 inches and 36 inches, respectively.
