HP Makes First Entry into Digital Textile Printing

Back in early 2018, we spoke with Mike Horsten, then Business Manager for Large Format Professional EMEA at HP, about HP’s potential plans for entering the digital textile printing market. Now, more than a year later, HP has made its first announcements, launching the HP Stitch series of textile printers. The company held a media briefing to discuss its strategy.

Back in early 2018 when we spoke with HP’s Mike Horsten about HP’s digital textile printing strategy, Horsten said, “The areas we will be focusing on will be announced shortly but we will be looking at reinventing the digital printing of textiles.” He noted that the strategy would involve improving workflows and the textile supply chain as well as focusing on fleet color management.

Now the first announcements have been made, and HP positions this as only a starting point for its digital textile printing portfolio. The company claims it is “reinventing dye-sublimation printing with the launch of HP Stitch.”

First, let’s take a look at what products were announced: “The portfolio of printers couple[s] HP Thermal Inkjet technology with industry-standard dyes for superior color durability. The first-ever built-in spectrophotometer enables Stitch’s fast and exact color-matching. The introduction includes three new printers from 64-inch to 126-inch wide: the HP Stitch S300 64-in Printer, the HP Stitch S500 64-in Printer, and the HP Stitch S1000 126-in Printer.”
