Kodak CTO Terry Taber: Commercialization and Monetization of Technology

Five years ago, Kodak CTO Terry Taber began building a technology pipeline that he hoped would lead the company into new businesses, including a key focus area for CEO Jeff Clarke, Functional Printing. He speaks with Senior Editor Cary Sherburne about the current state of the organization from a technology perspective.

Kodak’s CEO Jeff Clarke has challenged the organization to reinvent itself, including driving a significant cultural shift in the company, what he sometimes refers to as an “Intel inside” approach, especially in the area of functional printing. While the company has historically been fairly vertically integrated, it is now exploring more opportunities to license and OEM its technologies rather than marketing everything under the Kodak brand. A key enabler in that cultural shift is its CTO, Terry Taber, who I recently had the pleasure of speaking with.

Taber began his career at Kodak in 1980 as a research scientist after obtaining his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Caltech. Today, he is the Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President, as well as President of Kodak’s IP Solutions Division, reporting directly to Clarke.
