Lakeside Book Company: Growing Beyond Production

The best way to describe Lakeside Book Company is “a diversified book manufacturer as well as a book warehousing, fulfillment, and distribution services provider for publishers.” It is one of the largest book-printing and book-distribution operations in North America. The are becoming a publishers partner and help their customers manage the full life cycle of their titles, their book titles, whether it’s a single copy or over a million copies of softcover, casebound, one-color, four-color. And they keep on growing.

Lakeside Book Company is a North American book manufacturing, printing, binding, warehousing, fulfillment, and distribution company that serves publishers and other content owners. It is the leading book printer in North America and it can handle everything from printing and binding to supply chain management and distribution. Lakeside Book Company legacy dates to 1864, when R.R. Donnelley started as a partner at a small printing company in Chicago. The company presents itself as inheriting that long printing tradition and says it has been trusted for more than 160 years.

According to Jim Sorensen, President of Lakeside Book Company, “I like to say we’re a 162-year-old startup company. Our roots go back to 1864 and we are a result of not only that original set of book manufacturing facilities, but a continued focus on growth. As a result, we acquired Banta in 2006 and von Hoffman in 2007. After that, we acquired Courier, and that’s when the split to LSC Communication formed. Soon after that, Lakeside Book Company was founded.”

Lakeside Book Company is a relatively new brand that was created about six years ago, and since 2020, they have acquired a number of companies. In 2022, they acquired Phoenix Color, which was more of a vertical acquisition. Phoenix’s focus is dust jackets, covers for the trade, education, and religious markets, as well as children’s picture books, both softcover and casebound. A year after that, they acquired Canadian Marquis Book Printing, which included their three manufacturing facilities as well as a warehousing and fulfillment center. That acquisition added school yearbook capabilities as well as design capabilities.
