Technical Advisory: Pre/Post-Purchase—Print Quality Validation for Inkjet Devices

In today’s environment, when shopping for printing equipment, it’s time to move beyond the table-top beauty contest. Evaluating pre- and post-install inkjet systems based on visual inspection alone is not just outdated, it is risky. Mary Schilling explains why buyers need to shift to quantitative Print Quality Analysis (PQA).

As the inkjet industry gears up for another trade show cycle, it’s time to move beyond the table-top beauty contest. Evaluating pre- and post-install inkjet systems based on visual inspection alone is not just outdated, it is risky. Buyers must shift toward quantitative Print Quality Analysis (PQA) to ensure device performance aligns with installation and long-term production demands.

While visual inspection has long been a staple of pressroom decision-making, it is inherently subjective and insufficient for high-stakes procurement. Instead, Print Quality Analysis should be conducted using quantifiable metrics that reflect the true performance of the device under controlled conditions.

PQA is a foundational component of any rigorous inkjet printing operation, serving as both a diagnostic tool and a strategic safeguard. In high-performance environments, whether producing packaging, signage, textiles, or commercial print, visual inspection alone is insufficient. Human perception is inherently variable, influenced by ambient lighting, viewing angle, and individual bias. While visual checks may catch gross defects, they often miss micro-level inconsistencies such as dot placement errors, nozzle misfires, banding artifacts, graininess, or subtle color shifts. These issues, if left undetected, can compromise brand integrity, customer satisfaction, and production efficiency.

Finishing Takes Control

Finishing Takes Control

True print and color quality are not only determined on the print engine but on the finishing line as well, where tension, folding, cutting, and binding can make or break registration, color stability, and overall consistency. Automated imposition, real?time image correction, barcode-driven control, and robotic trimming eliminate cumulative errors, color drift, and mechanical damage, enabling short?run and variable?data books to maintain perfect registration and color fidelity, proving print quality cannot truly be judged until the product is fully finished.
