How Printers Should Be Thinking about Human Resources Management

HR is complicated. It couldn’t be otherwise, because its domain is people. Changing laws and shifting societal trends add to the challenge of doing HR the right way. Here’s some guidance from experts.

When we asked OpenAI’s ChatGPT to identify leading issues in human resources management for U.S. employers today, we got the kind of thoroughly detailed and logically structured response that AI chatbots have become famous for. The list is complex, and to better understand the ramifications of some of these issues for owners and managers of printing businesses, we queried a number of human experts in the field for their insights.

Dr. Kent J. Wessinger, CEO of Retention Partners, says attracting talent is the number one HR challenge for all employers—a challenge that many of them are trying to address in a way that time has passed by.

“We are in a talent war today,” Wessinger declares. Employers and their HR managers typically respond by “following a pattern of behavior that is age-old, which is when someone leaves, we fill the position.” The difficulty with this strategy, however, is that it can’t keep ahead of the rate of job turnover that employers now have to confront.
