25 Years Since Launching and Mimeo is Still Innovating

It’s been some time since we have provided an update on on-demand printer Mimeo. I recently had the opportunity to speak with the company’s Vice President of Engineering, Bassim Alamiry, who shared the latest company updates.

Mimeo was founded in the heat of the dot-com bubble back in 1998. I remember calling on them when I was working for CAP Ventures, an industry consulting firm that has morphed into InfoTrends. It was a small office in Manhattan, and we spoke with three of the founders: Jeff Stewart, David Uyttendaele, and John Delbridge; the latter two are still with the company! I remember asking them why the name Mimeo. The answer? For some, it’s nostalgic; for others, it’s a catchy name. I was one of the nostalgic ones, I guess!

Since that time, Mimeo has come a long way. Today, the company has three production facilities globally: Memphis, Huntingdon, UK, and Berlin, Germany. Its corporate headquarters in Memphis is at the foot of the FedEx runway, making it possible to get packages submitted for next day delivery as late as 10PM.  The Memphis facility is comprised of 140,000 square feet, 101,000 of which is production and warehousing, with the remainder for office and other uses. The company, still privately held, employs approximately 500 team members worldwide, with 270 of them in Memphis. As a provider of on-demand print and digital solutions, Mimeo has focused on creating as much automation as possible. Alamiry explains, “Our core strength lies in our proprietary technology. We've developed a sophisticated, in-house shop floor control system that optimizes the entire production workflow. From the moment a customer submits an order through our website or marketplace, our intelligent algorithms analyze various characteristics like paper type, finishing options, and other production parameters to dynamically batch orders for maximum efficiency and throughput.”

Mimeo has long found success in the education and training market, where they provide all of the necessary materials for a given training session via digital print combined with its kitting and fulfillment operation. Similar services are also provided for corporate and other meetings, also providing complete kits, customized to the client’s needs. Kits can either be shipped in bulk to the organizer or to individual recipients.
