The Key to Z: Managing to a Generational Shift

Last summer, we asked our readers, “Are you ready for the Gen Z work force?” As we enter 2023 and the balance between open jobs and available employees still has not balanced out, it’s time to revisit this topic again. Remember that Gen Zers will make up 25% of the workforce by 2025, when they will range in age from 13 to 28. They are a rich source of potential employees—now and for years to come. We thought it would be good to review what they are looking for, how to hire and retain them, as we enter 2023 with an economy this is still a bit chaotic.

Did you know there are 68.6 million Gen Zers living in the United States? That’s 20% of the U.S. population! Not all of them are old enough to be entering the workforce yet, but many are. And they are not your grandfather’s employees. And 38% of them are already in the workforce.

Probably the biggest concern Gen Zers have is around climate change and environmental issues. In fact, Gen Zers “see a world on fire,” and they are pragmatists that are inclined to answer the bell. They are more likely to be activists, not only relative to environmental issues, but also with respect to racial injustice, gun violence, and many other issues facing the United States today.

Born between 1997 and 2007, they are “digital natives that have had access to real-time, unlimited and unfiltered content practically since birth,” according to an Ernst & Young (EY) study. It is, by far, the most diverse generation yet. But they are not a monolithic group by any means. The EY study identified five different segments:
