An Imaging Company at Heart: Part 2—SCREEN Is Building an Impressive Digital Packaging Portfolio

There is no doubt that digital packaging is a huge growth area for production inkjet, and SCREEN seems to be targeting the high growth areas. They have been developing a range of digital packaging presses including their currently available prime label presses, and the new flexible packaging press and a folding carton press.

Screen Holdings Co., formerly Dainippon Screen Mfg. Co., Ltd., is based in Kyoto, Japan. Today, the company has an annual revenue of about US$4.0 billion. While they have manufacturing sites around the globe, the Truepress Jet 520 presses are all manufactured in Japan. The company has more than 6,000 employees worldwide with an impressive 92% of their workforce in R&D, engineering, and technical positions. They proudly spend about $300K a day on R&D in its three core technologies.

To maximize the strengths of each of these developments across multiple disciplines, including precise imaging, fluid management, jetting, scanning, inspection, and data analysis SCREEN created White Canvas Rakusai. It is an agnostic industry think tank where “all divisions use similar technology which is then adapted to the specific purpose.” Interestingly, they open up this think tank outside their internal groups to partners and even competitors as well. The philosophy seems to be that if we work together, we can all benefit from our collective experiences. It seems to work as evidenced by the number one position in global share of its equipment in the fields of Semiconductor production, Flat Panel Display Production and Coating and a leader in Printed Circuit Board equipment.
