Canon has the leading market share in production inkjet and has the widest range of production inkjet presses available. Since 2011, Canon has been developing and expanding their production inkjet product line to continue to capture both toner and offset produced pages. Their two primary commercial print webfed products include the ColorStream with over 1400 installs and the ProStream with over 40 press lines (80 engines) installed since its introduction in 2017. Additionally, they continue to offer their JetStream series printers as well, with over 270 installed. They recently expanded their commercial print sheetfed line which includes the varioPRINT i300 with over 250 installations to include the varioPRINT iX, and has already sold 20 since its launch on April 1. This is all in addition to their entry into packaging with the LabelStream 4000.

Production inkjet can provide many new on-demand and variable-data opportunities; however, the long-term goal of all production inkjet press manufacturers is to displace and capture existing printed pages. According to the Smithers “Future of Inkjet Printing” report, “In value terms, inkjet is projected to increase from 8.8% share of the total print market in 2018 to 13.0% in 2023. In print volume terms, inkjet is much lower, moving from just 1.5% share of print area in 2018 to 2.9% in 2023.” That translates into a lot of growth opportunity.
