You should read the second edition of my book, "Modern Digital Halftoning," which was published in 2008. I have an entire chapter dedicated to the topic of multi-level halftoning and how to optimize the combinations of available droplets. That book is generally considered to be one of the top three technical books on the subject of halftoning. If you really want to know how halftoning, or in this case multi-toning, is done, then that's the place to read about it.

It is on the radar, but I would plan on it any time soon. Thanks for the encouragement though. Comments like this actually help convince publishers that a next edition is worthwhile.
