One thing not mentioned is that the publisher's stranglehold on the market has been broken - anyone can be a publisher. This is akin to the democratization of news reporting by Twitter, YouTube et. al. that is killing the conventional news distribution/publishing business.

@Gordon Pritchard. Good points. The truism that "anyone can be a publisher" should probably have an addendum "but that doesn't mean that anyone will become a LARGE publisher." The overall financial structure of the U.S. book industry is pretty much the same as it was pre-Internet -- much of the consolidation predates the technology shift.

Thad/Gordon; another "addendum" might be . . .not everyone can or will be a trust wordy or good publisher/editor. Yes, there is a lot of free information on the internet and on social media, but maybe/hopefully people still want well researched- and written "stuff", and are willing to pay for it.
