Frank Romano: This is Frank Romano from “WhatTheyThink.com”. This is the first time we've done a video from a ship. Well, you can tell it's a ship because you can see the water in the background. And I'm with two very nice young ladies who run the print shop on the Queen Mary II, the Cunard liner that's crossing the Atlantic right now on it's way to South Hampton and later on to Hamburg.
Uh, Kelly, you're holding up some of the things that you guys print in the print shop. So for instance, the newspaper you do there, USA Times, you do three versions? One for the USA, one for the U.K., and then one for the... German passengers?
Kelly: Germany.
Frank Romano: On the other ships that do... that have other contingents of other nationalities you do other languages
Kelly: Right.
Frank Romano: You do the the daily program, which is the one there on the top. That's done every day; it tells everybody what's going on on the ship, what times the movies are, and especially what times the restaurants are open because all we do on this ship is eat. So, Rosemary, you're the chief printer on board. What kind of presses do you have?
Rosemary: We have a Heidelberg press. It's a two-color press, a quick master [ph], and we have a Reisone [ph] duplicator
Frank Romano: And you love the Heidelberg press because even if a torpedo hit it you would only possibly get a hickey.
Rosemary: Yes, we've only had very, very minor problems with it. Nothing major ever.
Frank Romano: And Cunard is one of the few ships that actually uses offset lithography.
Rosemary: Yes.
Frank Romano: So no digital on board?
Rosemary: No.
Frank Romano: Kelly, you are going to graduate momentarily, and you'll be looking for a job at some point in time, so customer service might be some of the – one of the things you might be looking at?
Kelly: Possibly. I need to explore and see what's out there because I'm not really sure where I want to go in the printing industry, but I want to be in it. That's for sure.
Frank Romano: Now, you leave the ship in a month or so?
Kelly: In August.
Frank Romano: And then go back to... I think you're from Utica?
Kelly: Yes.
Frank Romano: And then decide at the point what you're going to do?
Kelly: Right.
Frank Romano: You could always go get a master's degree, you know.
Kelly: I could.
Frank Romano: And Rosemary, you've graduated, so you're now an employee of Cunard, and you're called the Chief Printer, correct?
Rosemary: Yes. I've been working here for about three years now.
Frank Romano: So you – both of you, by the way, just finished a world cruise, so you've gone around - printed your way around the world.
Rosemary: Yeah, that was quite an experience.
Frank Romano: By the way, is this one of the few times that you've had an all woman crew? Have there...? I don't remember too many of them in the past. I remember it was always either two guys or a guy and a lady.
Rosemary: There's usually a male person in the print shop, but since I've been on board this is the first time I've had a female assistant.
Frank Romano: And you print more than just the stuff we're showing here – the newspaper, the advisory, the port-of-call information – but you print cards of various kinds. Is it true you print business cards for the first class passengers?
Rosemary: Uh, occasionally.
Frank Romano: Okay. I've heard you print all kinds of stuff down there. What's the most unique thing you print?
Rosemary: Uummmmm, most unique? Invitations...?
Frank Romano: Okay – for all the different events that they have. Sure! So of all the places you've visited in the world, what was the most interesting, Rosemary?
Rosemary: I'd say Egypt... seeing the pyramids.
Frank Romano: And Kelly, what did you like the most?
Kelly: I really liked South Africa.
Frank Romano: Now I understand that some people – one of my friends took a safari when they were there. I told them that they could have gone to Animal Kingdom in Orlando, and it would've been the same thing. But they said, “No, no – that's not true at all.”
So, Rosemary, you'll be on then for another year or two, a few years?
Rosemary: Yeah, I'd like to stay on for at least another year, get another world cruise in.
Frank Romano: Yes, yes. That's one of the nice perks. Now, are either of you going to bring a parent on board at some point?
Rosemary: My parents will be on board in September.
Frank Romano: Yeah, because Cunard has this program where they can share the room with you.
Rosemary: Yes.
Frank Romano: That's not a bad idea. But Kelly, you'll be off, so you might not get that chance.
Kelly: They just come to visit.
Frank Romano: Which is not bad at all, is it?
Kelly: No.
Frank Romano: Well, this has really been great. You guys are doing a wonderful job, and thank you very, very much.
Kelly and Rosemary: Thank you.
