Frank wants to know what printers are actually printing. Certain categories of print like “Financial” went electronic with the EDGAR and “Catalogs” are mostly online. So what are we printing and where are the growth areas for printing companies?

A bunch of the research that Keypoint Intelligence did (and continues to do) divides out printing by application breaks (books, promotional, transaction, etc.). A recent example is their "Vertical Visions Multi-Client Study: An Analysis of Business Print Demand by Vertical Industry." One issue with really understanding what printers print is that there are many different types of printers with different application mixes. Are you talking about book printers, in-plants, financial printers, commercial printers, outdoor graphic printers, publication printers, quick printers, online printers, etc.? The list goes on and on, with plenty of overlap. Doing a research study of all types of printers would be massive. It's not that it couldn't be done, but it would be very expensive.
