Eric Vessels talks to industry analyst, writer, and former WhatTheyThink contributor Patrick Henry, who has recently announced his retirement. They look back at Pat’s career—he began as a stringer for the long-gone Long Island Press newspaper covering the police beat and in 1984 answered a classified ad for an editorial position at the then-weekly Printing News. Pat wrote for WhatTheyThink from 2002 to 2017. We wish Pat all the best!

I have known and worked with Pat for decades (yes decades). He has always been a great investigator and communicator of important print industry information. While he says he is hanging up his spurs, I believe we haven't heard the last from Pat... All the best my friend...

ditto David's comments! I will have the pleasure of continuing to work with Pat for a while, at least, since he'll be doing some writing for one of my clients. Where has the time gone? Have a joyous retirement, my friend! I still remember all those conversations about whether or not you needed to wear a tie at trade shows!! :-)

Ditto ditto Cary and Dave. I first worked with Pat in 1998, after the Cygnus (then-owner of Printing News) acquisition of Micro Publishing and the New Yorkers got to meet their West Coast brethren at a friendly meet-up at our Torrance, Calif., office (before all the high drama began). I think our first adventure together was a Seybold Show Daily or two in 1999—and all the challenges of remote production in the days before WiFi (not to mention same-day editorial deadlines). We worked again together again almost 20 years later on various Graph Expo Show Dailies, and our times at WTT overlapped a bit, and I was always impressed by his professionalism, perfection, and great writing (il miglior fabbro). And it was always a joy to run into Pat at events, whether we were working on the same team or not. Happy retirement!

I first met Patrick in the late 1980s early in my consulting career when I was working on a study of New York City's printing industry... and he was at Printing News. But I had read his work years before when I was new to the industry and PN would send him to cover what seemed to be every gathering of every single industry event or gathering of even what seemed to be the smallest of associations or specialties. Oh, how important his reporting was at that time, in educating industry newbies, but also in strengthening the fabric of the casual networks that made the industry work. Patrick was always interested in facts. Facts? Yes, those pesky little things that get in the way of supplied narratives, and Patrick would find a way to get it into proper perspective in a gracious way. Always a gentle man and a gentleman, and always someone who had a good word for everyone. And Patrick... retirement is a lot more than "every day is yet another Saturday"... I hope you have a grand, happy, long, active, and healthy one! And if you're ever in NC.... you know how to find me!

I've had the pleasure of working with Pat through the years and he's always been such a genuine nice guy and so easy to work with. I first met him while working with Dr. Joe on a research project back some 20 years ago. Later our paths crossed again here at WhatTheyThink and most recently we connected at a few Xeikon events. Pat, it has always been a pleasure to run into you. Enjoy your retirement, you deserve it! Perhaps our paths will cross again someday.

Pat, I'm so happy that you have finally been given Liberty without the death part. Your fans above have done a fabulous job extolling your many virtues so I will simply say that I whole heartedly agree and wish you the best. I hope your semi-retirement brings opportunities for us to work (or not work!) together. Cheers.
