His Pseudonym-ness, D. Eadward Tree,  Chief Arborist of the Dead Tree Edition, has weighed in on the landmark truce announced yesterday by Canadian forestry companies and green groups. It's a very interesting read, and really worth the investment of a few moments of your time.  Among D. Eadward's observations:

It’s surprising enough that the former enemies signed a deal involving forestry practices and conservation for an area of the Canadian boreal forest larger than Texas.

Even more stunning is that radical environmental groups like Greenpeace and ForestEthics signed an agreement that calls for “policies and investments that improve the competitiveness of the Canadian forest sector” and “improved prosperity of the Canadian forest sector and the communities that depend on it.” That’s a big switch from contentions that no logging should occur in ecologically sensitive boreal (sub-arctic) forests.

AND

The agreement also recognizes the legitimacy of the industry-backed Sustainable Forestry Initiative in addition to the rival Forest Stewardship Council.

In my humble opinion...  I am not so sure the latter is true, especially since ForestEthics has pretty much declared "open season" on SFI and its avocates. (See my article, "Do Not Mail Campaign" Morphs – Are Printers Out of the Woods?" for more on that. But, draw your own conclusion. To read D. Eadward's take on it, click here. And if ForestEthics or anyone else on the NGO side of the Canadian Boreal Agreement is reading this, we'd like to have you put in your two cents worth as well. (Hey, the exchange rate is almost at parity!)
