This last weekend the European Football Championship started and is taking place in Austria and Switzerland. First of all for American readers football is not the game played by highly over paid very large men wearing more body armor than the troops fighting in Iraq. Instead it is the game known by you as soccer played by over paid men in sports gear covered with advertisements. In Germany football is an obsession that is almost as important as the German obsession with beer. The good thing is the two obsessions go together for spectators. You now see large numbers of cars flying the national German flag or flags as they drive along. Whenever there is a game on TV all the beer houses and restaurants install large screen TVs and the Germans flock to these places to indulge in the two national obsessions. Even at drupa they have installed a large screen TV between two of the halls in the Beer Garden (yes there is a beer garden at drupa) allowing visitors, exhibitors and all to gather after the day's close of the show to watch the game, naturally with a glass or glasses of beer. Naturally we British who are here ignore all this going on as we concentrate on the drupa show. This is nothing to do with the fact that the English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish teams got knocked out in the preliminary stages of this tournament. The big difficulty for us is to find a restaurant in the evening without a TV and lots of happy, and beer drinking, Germans supporting their team. The problem is if the German team loses the whole country will go into mourning and the country will stop. At least drupa should be finished by that time, if it happens.
