HP today showed that its new Inkjet Web Press that is stated to be of 30 inch in print format actually is printing a 36 inch wide web. HP indicated to me that while the production version of this that is due for first sales installations during 2009 will have a 30 inch wide web format, the press at drupa is of 36 inch width to demonstrate the capabilities of HP's Scaleable Printing Technology to assemble wide measure print arrays. The press at drupa uses eight print heads to build each print array rather than the seven that will be used in the 30 inch production version of the press. This press takes up one end of the HP stand in Hall 8a of the Düsseldorf Messe and looks a very impressive finished product. The quality of the output samples being produced is really excellent and I maintain my earlier projection that this will be the digital hit of drupa. as yet HP has not thought of a name for this press apart from the HP Inkjet Web Press.
