Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos told listeners of the company's fourth quarter earnings call that retailer was having trouble keeping up with the demand for the Kindle:
"The Kindle, in terms of demand, is outpacing our expectations," Bezos said. "It is also, on the manufacturing side, causing us to scramble. We’re working very hard to increase the number of units that we can build and supply per week, so that we can get back—our goal is to get into a situation as quickly as we can where when you order a Kindle, we ship it immediately... We are super-excited by the very strong demand."

Please don't shoot me, but I like the Kindle. Not for everything, but I found it just fine for reading novels of the James Patterson and Clive Cussler variety.
I bought one to better research "The Enemy."
It was great to use on a plane and I found it easy to read. The visual quality isn't quite there for serious graphics, but for simple text, it was more than up to the task.
Twice, while absorbed in my reading, I tried to flip the pages forgetting that I didn't have a printed book in my hand and needed to push the side bar. Hmmm.
I don't like that I can't "lend" a book to someone else. But the ease of purchase and download makes a compelling case for the road warrior who needs to replenish his supply of reading material.

I am all ears for the success Amazon is enjoying with the Kindle. Nice to see it. But, at the same time, I must say that the appearance of the Kindle is not too pleasing for the eye or if I must say "non-appealing". Being a regular amazon.com consumer, I am a little concerned for amazon contemplating the fact that if the Googles or the Apples and the likes come out with a better looking "Kindle" for a smarter price then Amazon may experience anxiety in the other direction i.e so many units produced but no takers. It just doesn't look like a 21st century product to me. Looks like something that cam out of a garage sale. Anyways, I hope they consider making it sleek.
