In the March 7th issue of the Seattle Post Intelligencer (the PI to those of us who live in Seattle), Cecelia Goodnow's article "Teens buying books at fastest rate in decades" gave new hope that the book publishing is on its way up again. Encouraging piece...
And remember, Harry Potter #7 is due out July 7th. Order your copy today! (Full disclosure: I have all six of the original editions and I'm not going to miss out on this one!)

Are kids just getting smarter? There is a theory that access to information makes people smarter. Maybe what we are seeing here is that the Google generation is actually more engaged and smarter than previous generations. And the problem has never really been the form of books as objects. But the fact that many books are not very good. Once "good" books - as defined by the reader - are available, the actual physical form doesn't seem to be much of a problem. In fact, the book is a pretty good information delivery device..no batteries, portable, cheap... Maybe the "crisis" in books, is just a natural evolutionary development of weeding out of bad books in a more competitive information/ entertainment market. Cecilia Goodnow's article suggest that the solution may just be better content.
