World’s first PP transparent barrier film for boiling water sterilization and hot filling and first PE transparent barrier film
Tokyo – Toppan Printing (Toppan), a global leader in communication, security, packaging, décor materials, and electronics solutions, has expanded its market-leading GL BARRIER range of transparent vapor-deposited films with the development of GL-X-BP, the world’s first polypropylene (PP)-based transparent barrier film suitable for boiling water sterilization and hot filling, and GL-X-LE, the world’s first transparent barrier film using a polyethylene (PE) substrate.
Following Toppan’s recent announcements of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) monomaterial flexible packaging and GL-LP, a PP-based barrier film for simple monomaterial packaging, this latest development means that Toppan has now established a full lineup of PET -, PP-, and PE-based transparent barrier films for functional monomaterial packaging.
PP-based GL-X-BP can be used in spouted pouches, laminated tubes, and other functional packaging for a wide range of products, including baby food, fruit compote, and other foods with liquid content. Its outstanding heat and water resistance make it suitable for boiling water sterilization and hot filling. GL-X-LE, meanwhile, is the world’s first PE-based transparent vapor-deposited barrier film. It can be used for such items as dry baby food, beef jerky, and granola bars. Sample shipments of single-layer GL-X-LE film will begin in October 2019 and samples of laminated film using GL-X-BP are due to be available in the first half of 2020.
“Advanced technologies honed over more than 30 years as a leading manufacturer of transparent barrier films have made it possible for Toppan to overcome the challenges of making a heat and water resistant PP-based film and adding barrier performance to PE material,” said Masa Tatewaki, Executive Officer of Toppan’s global barrier film business and President & CEO of Toppan USA. “These films cater to global demand for improved plastic recycling by enabling monomaterial packaging that can more readily be input into recycling systems, such as those being established for PE in the United States. We will continue to focus on developing monomaterial packaging with enhanced recyclability and creating more eco-friendly packages for a diverse range of contents.”
Toppan will be showcasing GL-X-BP, GL-X-LE, and its other cutting-edge packaging solutions at PACK EXPO Las Vegas from September 23 to 25.
