Boston, MA -- August 7, 2002 -- Data in a new report by State Street Consultants, Inc., show that large printers are no longer the dominant buyers in the metal CTP market, a position they held until just last year. Through 1999, more than 75% of all metal CTP units installed each year in printers were in plants with more than 100 employees.
Two years ago the proportion of systems going into large printers dropped to half. Last year it dropped to just over a third, equaling that for printers with 50-99 employees. Not far behind these two groups are small printers with 20-49 employees whose share of installations in the printer segment grew 10% last year. Sales to small printers with fewer than 20 employees are slow but have been steadily increasing. As sales move increasingly into mid-size and small printers, plenty of opportunity remains in the large printer sector even though 43% have at least one system, indicating high penetration.
Creo continues to be the major supplier of metal CTP systems in printers, but is losing share to Fuji, Heidelberg, Screen, and Presstek; while Agfa, a distant 2nd to Creo, maintained share through 2001.
State Street Consultants’ report, The Changing Dynamics of CTP Market Share, is based on data from their North American Market Scanning Service of 24,000 establishments, including more than 12,000 printers. It focuses on metal CTP among printers, and covers a sample of more than 1,600 platesetters installed in more than 1,260 printing plants over the past five years. The Changing Dynamics of CTP Market Share addresses the interests of CTP system and plate manufacturers and vendors.
